Day 17 – Tain to Tongue

Posted in Uncategorized on July 24, 2013 by lejogsb9

photoA nice cool start greeted us today as we pedalled through the Monros. Our route took us along the shores of Dornoch Firth, Loch’s Shin, Naver, Loyal and Craggie and onto the Kyle of Tongue. Enjoying a tailwind we were able to cover ground very quickly. We also experienced one of the most scenic days of the tour, which was totally stunning.  In fact, we had to remember to keep our eyes on the tarmac as we became absorbed in the beauty of the landscape.  Upon reaching Tongue a few of us continued over the causeway and made a short ascent which offered far reaching views of Rabbit Island.  Having been so fortunate with the weather we have been counting our blessings – along with miles – which now total 969!

Day 3 – Lostwithiel to Exeter

3 miles out of Lostwithiel Wendy’s tyre burst.  It sounded like a gun going off and Patrick thought Sye had been shot!  With a new tyre and inner tube in situ Patrick and Sye serenaded Wendy all the way to the highest cafe in Cornwall by singing Elvis songs. Regrouping we refuelled well before heading towards the Devonshire border and up onto Exmoor.  We knew this was going to be a fairly tough day and in the searing heat it proved to be a bit of a slog. We did manage to take time out to admire the fantastic views on top of Exmoor and also stopped to admire the ponies. By the time we made it to Exeter we were all fairly tired and very pleased with our achievement, especially as it was so hot.

Day 1 and we’re off!

..... and we're off!

Today was a day of not many miles. 9.5 to be precise. A bit of a settling in day with everyone in good spirits and looking forward to making a start. Lots of hilarity in the ladies dorm at Penzance Hostel with several attempts at repacking, unpacking, repacking…. I think you get the picture! The day ended with a true to form Patrick dragging everyone off to Wetherspoons.
